Tool of the Month - November 2019

Posted in WOLF-Garten Blog by Lee Wills on 22/11/2019

It is now November, the 11th month of the year 2019.

Winter will be with us very soon and temperatures have started to nosedive. Leaves crunch underfoot and there is plenty of wind and rain to contend with too. Be sure to wrap up warm and pack a flask when working for extended periods of time in your garden, allotment or outdoor space.

Some of your delicate plants will require protection from the gales, freezing rain and frost so it's time to move them into your greenhouse or a sheltered spot. Worst case scenario you could consider wrapping up your plants and pots to help insulate.

Here are this month's top ten jobs (according to Royal Horticultural Society):

  • Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds
  • Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging
  • Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year
  • Prune roses to prevent wind-rock
  • Plant out winter bedding
  • Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem
  • Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubblewrap works well
  • Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks
  • Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden
  • Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting

To assist you clear up all the leaves that have fallen of late you need a good rake with robust yet flexible tines, we recommend the Wolf Garten UIMC Multi-Change Leaf Rake.
