Peak summer, enjoy your garden...

Often the hottest month of the year, it's time to enjoy your garden and the fruits of your year round labours. Consider gardening in the early morning or evening when it's cooler and endeavour to stay in the shade. Dead heading is recommended, ensure your plants are well watered. Keep your hoe at hand to stave off the weeds.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, the top ten jobs to get on with this month in the garden are as follows:

  • Check clematis for signs of clematis wilt
  • Care for houseplant while on holiday
  • Water tubs and new plants if dry, but be water-wise
  • Deadhead bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials, to ensure continuous flowering
  • Pick courgettes before they become marrows
  • Treat apple scab
  • Clear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds, and keep them topped up
  • Order catalogues for next year’s spring-flowering bulbs
  • Give the lawn a quick-acting summer feed, especially if not given a spring feed
  • Harvest apricots, peaches and nectarines
