Tool of the Month - January 2021
Winter in full force
The harshest season, winter. Often January is the coldest month in the year so it's time to head indoors and plan ahead for the warmer months.
Whilst there isn't a great deal to be done in the garden, you can always find something to keep you busy.
Here are this month's top ten jobs (according to Royal Horticultural Society):
- Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch
- Clean pots and greenhouses ready for spring
- Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already
- Disperse worm casts in lawns
- Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out
- Prune apple and pear trees
- Start forcing rhubarb
- Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season
- Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds
- Make a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect against peach leaf curl

Some hours spent cleaning and tidying up now will save you the trouble when there is more interesting graft to be done..
